About Me

We're geeks because we have passion for things that most people think are fringe!  Embrace!  I'm a Star Wars fanboy- in the full sense of the word- Stood in line for all the films except the first one, have all the toys, have the posters, dress like a stormtrooper... I even have Mission to Ord Mantell on vinyl!  Its not all Star Wars though- so much great science fiction to go around!  Iain M Banks?  You must!  I've read Tolkien nearly every year since I was in grade six, which led me learn how to use a sword.  I'm also a history geek- but is that really being a geek?  Hmmm... well, I'm working on a MA in Public History anyway.  I am a pretty 'strident' atheist and liberal... in fact, I'll go further- I'm a Democratic Socialist.  Oh, and I collect records.  See, here's where I wonder about geekness.  Everyone loves music and most people have a music collection.  Is it geeky to have over 2000 records- sorted and cataloged, and occasionally play them as a DJ?  Or how about being a Geeks Who Drink Quiz Master... ok that is geeky.
Oh- this steampunk thing is brilliant!  I want to know more.

I am a classic introvert- sometimes incredibly shy.  But, as things often go- once I get to know someone I can be pretty engaging.  I have, what has been called, a dry sense of humor.  I'm obsessed with British alternative comedy and beyond.  I've tried to write comedy in the past, and may try again.

You know the Ice Man?  That's me.  All celt- Scottish, Welsh, and Austro-Italian.  I'm a little shorter than average- 5'6"- and stocky...ok, I'm overweight!   I usually wear a beard, and right now have long hair.  Don't think that'll last though.  My ears have been pierced since 15 and I have the beginnings of a nice tattoo collection.

University of Colorado, Boulder- BA History
University of Colorado, Denver- MA Public History (in the works)

I work for the U of Colorado Medical School library.  Have done for way too long...

University of COlorado, Boulder- Norlin Library
University of Colorado, Denver- Health Sciences Library

I collect...  records, books (sepecially Tolkien, Wodehouse and of course science fiction), Star Wars stuff, costumes, movie posters, props, movies, swords, scooters, and a few other odds and sods.  I've always said that if I'm not reading something, I feel like I'm wasting time.

When my friends get together, it’s usually around grilling meat and beer.  We also spend quality time at quiz and hockey games.  I used to belong to several large groups, but as I’ve gotten older the group have gotten smaller and closer.  Nice how that happens…  Most of them still think it’s funny that I dress in vacu-form plastic though…

Nick Hornby said it best in High Fidelity- I'm looking for someone a bit more like myself.

I'm a beer snob.  I also try to pretend that I know about single malts and red wine.... ok, not red wine- but I like it.  I brew my own beer and have tried my hand at mead... mmmmm... mead...

Eating Habits: I'll eat just about anything

Drugs are not evil.  I've done them in the past, and may do them in the future- but probably not.  The main thing is- I hate the war on drugs, and I hate the victimization of those who need help.

Be comfortable, but don't be a slob.  If I could, I'd have a 1920s/1930s wardrobe- and all my scifi t-shirts.

I love the idea of working out...

How can people go for more then two days without a shower?

I can't have kids- but most of the small people I've met rule.

I have a cat.  I've never liked cats, but she's not too bad.  I love dogs- someday...  I've also always wanted a monkey.

As I said before- I'm a Democratic Socialist.  I think the US is going in the wrong direction and should be more like Europe.  I do not believe in the free market and I think unfettered capitalism is something to be fought against.

I'm a atheist.  I'm also an agnostic and an anti-theist.  You can be more than one thing, you know...

I took up a pipe when I turned forty.  Maybe it’s a bit of affectation, but I do enjoy it a couple of times a month.

I have never gotten any formal linguistics training or done any deep study of etymology, but I’d be willing to bet that the first utterance of human kind was the noun- to name things. Me, rock, tree, bird, lion, you, mountain, plain, home… and it seems to me that proper names...
