About Me

An intellectual at heart, I spend lots of time in my own head (and then with my pen to paper getting the ideas out of that head). Never intending to be a teacher, that is exactly what I've ended up becoming... and I love it. I teach 4th grade right now, and am looking to go back to school to get my Masters in Science Education. In keeping with the "geek" tag, I am interested in all things Japanese, especially anime and manga. I also enjoy origami and Japanese food. I'm a crafty geek as well, and sometimes make random things (usually as gifts for people) that reflect that. I'm addicted to webcomics, especially Exploding Dog, Questionable Content, and xkcd. I also like to cook, sing, draw, take pictures, and write. I have a tendency to overuse emoticons (haha). :P

I'm the kind of person who finds myself happiest when I am helping others. Being a teacher, I get to pass that on to my students... I'm trying to raise activists in my classroom. :) Last year my class set up a fundraiser for a school in Kenya that an alumna of my undergrad college works with. I always try to be my best self, but that is sometimes hard as I am shy around people I don't know. So it takes a while to get to know me, but eventually you'll see that I'm a kind, fun-loving person.

Hmmm... how to describe my personality. Well, I'm not a very big "people person" in the sense that I'm shy and introverted. However, if I'm close to you, I will do what I can to make you happy and show you I care. I have an... "interesting"... sense of humor, to say the least. I'm quite sarcastic in my jokes, and sadly, sometimes people think I'm being mean. I'm not, of course! My strongest personality trait is probably my consideration and caring for other people. However, this is a double-edged sword because I will put my own feelings on the back-burner in order not to upset anyone. My weakest personality trait is my introversion, probably. I'm too shy to talk to a lot of people and I feel like I'm probably missing out on some great friendships and such because of it!

Appearance-wise, I'm quite short and quite curvy. People tend to describe me as "cute" (which probably also has something to do with my personality). I'm pretty natural as far as make-up and such go. I don't bother with it much (though I am a lip balm addict). I have dark curly hair, which I'm trying to grow out long enough so I can donate it and still have a fair amount left afterward. I have freckles, most noticeably in the summer, and I like them. I don't have any piercings besides my ears, and I don't have any tattoos.

4th grade teacher

I worked at a nursing home in high school, as well as a department store. I still work for the department store every other weekend and during breaks from school (I've been there 5 or 6 years now, I think). I volunteer at a theater in my city, which I interned for during college. And I teach at a tiny private school, as well.

I'm the oldest of three kids, and the only girl (in other words, I have two younger brothers). I'm half Italian (Mum's side) and half Irish (Dad's side). I have 3 sort-of step-siblings, who I think are absolutely brilliant. The two girls are even more sarcastic than I am!

reading, writing, teaching, cooking, learning, giggling, being sarcastic, watching anime/reading manga, baking, taking photographs, being crafty, being kind, drawing, going to museums/conventions/exhibits, having meaningful conversations, watching "Gilmore Girls" and British sit-coms, listening to music (at the moment I am obsessed with J-Pop artists SNoW and Utada Hikaru and British Pop artist Gary Go), traveling

I'm a bit of a homebody, to be honest. I seek comfort, and curling up on the couch with a blanket and a good book or movie sounds good to me. But at the same time, I enjoy getting out and doing things as well. There is a theater in my city that does Open Mike once a week, and usually some friends and I try to get down there (no, I don't perform, I just watch and listen). My closest friends are kind of spread out a bit, with only two of them living close by, but the distance ones and I keep in touch via the internet and texting (I'm not so good over the phone, but I try!). I like to take the train to visit them sometimes too! I'm not one of those people who has tons and tons of close friends... just a few who I love and am super-loyal to. ^_^

I am looking for someone who will teach me new things but will also let me introduce them to new things. Someone who shares some of my interests but not all (I still would like to have something "just for me"). Someone to do things with, but also not do things with so we have something to talk about later. The most important traits I look for in someone-- friend or significant other-- are honesty and thoughtfulness. I appreciate a good sense of humor, but my own is less funny and more sarcastic (I tease a lot). I have a particular attraction to guys in glasses, but that is definitely not a requirement or anything! ;)

Uhm... My best friend from college recently told me I reminded her of a rabbit. When I asked her why, her reply was "because they're sweet creatures, but very shy." That pretty much sums me up. :P

I drink occasionally, but I'm a horrible lightweight, and one and a half amaretto and cokes (depending on the size, of course) leaves me babbling about things I probably shouldn't tell people. Hahaha.

I love cooking and experimenting with food. So, mostly I'll try anything once (though I'm not sure about crazy things like 1000 year old eggs and such).

I don't do them. I'd rather not hang out with people who do, honestly.

I could really care less about what's popular and such. I like jeans and tee-shirts. I have a bunch of geeky tee-shirts based on webcomics. For work I have to dress fairly nicely though, so I have nice clothes too.

I like walking and hiking. I also like shooting hoops on occasion. People who are obsessive about working-out intimidate me.

Good hygiene is... good.

Someday I'd like one.

I love animals. I have a cat named Haiji-san (bonus points for you if you get the reference!). I want a dog someday too.

I'm fairly liberal, I think, but I don't follow politics as much as I should...

I'm open to everyone's beliefs. Myself, I'm agnostic. I'm sure there is some sort of higher power, but I don't know what it is, and I don't really know how anyone could. But people are free to belief as they wish (just don't try to convert me, I find that pretty annoying).

I don't smoke, and I don't particularly enjoy being around people who do, because it gives me a headache. But I'm not going to judge you for it, just don't do it around me.
