eh see i dont really like 4.0. I think they over simplified it. I want to do a pathfinder game because it seems like a good cross between the good things i liked about 4.0 and 3.5.

i had a bad experience 3.5 and, i dont see the simplification as much, yes it is eaiser for people to pick up and start. but is that a bad thing

Well, 4.0 is really nice to start with new people on the hobby. 3.5 had a lot of math and little details, and it was quite easy to make a nearly unplayable character if you didn´t know what you were getting into.
I think 4.0, with the streamlined classes (Even the MMOinspired roles) makes the gaming experience more fluid, and the new supplements that keep coming add more and more customization options.
If you´re willing to go hardcore homebrew, the keyword mechaniscs, power and power source mechanics, make it quite easy to adapt existing powers to certain settings or even create completely new powers and power sources (With different roleplaying consequences)... I´ve been thinking for some time if I should homebrew and old setting of mine (Geos- A heavy elemental focused setting where manipulating natural elements is an inherent ability of most people). I could rework existing attacks with elemental variants (Flaming sword-fighters, Lightning-archers, etc) by adding elemental keywords to powers or event rework the powers sources into the "elemental arts" form, advanced techniques to help shape your will into more efficient forms while manipulating elements (Blade Arts, Song Arts, etc)... pretty easy customization.

honestly i think it was to dumbed down. I'd honestly rather switch to a whole knew system than play 4th. I feel like its D&D for dummies honestly. The system is too stream lined. Also the fact that its copying MMOs at all is very sad. MMO's are boring compared to a true D&D game and i am not just talking about 3.5 but 2nd ed Ad&D and what not. Honestly i will probably switch to pathfinder or stay with 3.5. Though i really enjoyed shadow run.

Well, it depends on where you look for on depht. I have no issues with simple, streamlined rules systems. The system has to be a medium to mechanically solve problems that arise when roleplaying. If you´re looking for more complex and tactical combat experience, or a more developed social interaction system or even a more realistic approach to skills, yes, there are way better systems out there. I like the whole D&D 4.0 package for it´s simplicity and efficiency on solving most common mechanical issues, so I can try and focus on a nice storyline and try to get deeper on non mechanical parts of the game.
D&D 3.5 allowed way deeper customization, I admit that clearly, and it´s direct upgrade is Pathfinder, I heard. Never played it, but my friends that play said it is D&D 3.5 without it´s more common flaws.
Myself, I don´t look for a flawless system, I look for a fun system, and D&D 4.0 can be a lot of fun if you don´t mind the more streamlined customization options... not having to get skills at a per point basis and having more fixed build options.

See i want to get into pathfinder. It took the only good parts i liked from 4th. And made a sorta d&d 3.75 type of thing. Stream lining the customization is something i dont like. I dont think of a character really having a class. I come up with a personality and what he can and cant do and mold what classes i can use to best put that together.

Yeah, I can relate to that, it´s way better to work it if you have a steady group, and freedom of creation is not one of D&D 4.0 bright spots. Myself I´ve been wanting to get some of the Warhammer RPGs by Fantasy Flight. I just started wargaming and the extra fluff and, most say, pretty neat mechanics make me really curious. My main problem is, even if I DM, I can´t get a group of players together around here.
And as a side note, I also approach that attitude, and the streamlining of 4.0 actually makes an interesting challenge. I recall, before they launched Divine Power, it really took some consideration to recreate my half elf sword and board paladin effectively XD... But in the end it felt all the more satisfying seeing how different, fluffy and still effective I could make it. After Divine power making an effective sword and board paladin is way easier.

right now i am trying to figure out what to play for my old D&D group. We are starting back up again and one of the others is starting to DM. We are are doing 3.5 and lvl 30 open to anything printed by any company for 3.5 or compatible to 3.5

Hi all. My group plays Savage Worlds, 3.5, Pathfinder, Warhammer 40k Fantasy, deathwatch.. Just about anything we can get ahold of.

i think 4.0 was a good version to introduce new people to gaming. that's about it.

oh and hello nice to meet you all!

Hello all, I played both 4.0 and 3.5 and I have to say that my 4.0 experience was better. But that was mostly due to having a better DM. As far as the system goes I really see the ups and downs with both. Our barbarian had a ton more fun with 4.0 yet our wizard liked 3.5
