Stopping Spammers !%&*$#!#!!!!!! Any ideas?

So one of the banes of our existence here on a free is spammers.  I'm sure you've all gotten emails from these lovely people.  Try as we might, we can't seem to stop them entirely.   We implemented a Captcha system on the new mail page, but if you're willing to pay someone to hand enter email then that doesn't really help much.  On the old site, we used to limit the number of emails someone could send in a day and if they exceeded that number we'd flag them.  If their messages looked suspect, we'd kick them.  The new site doesn't have this built in by default, so we're thinking of implementing it and looking at other ways to reduce the spam traffic.  I thought I'd throw it out to the membership to see if you might have thoughts on reducing these annoying emails.  Any input would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff

I just responded with a comment on the site feed, but my suggestion basically covered what you've put here. If people reach exceed the limit, you can check the mail, or perhaps you can lift/raise limits for people that request it - then you can check their history, see if they're established etc. That of course relies on you being able to individualise the settings for mail limits!

Have them answer

Have them answer geek/nerd-related questions, perhaps filtered by appropriate tags. It'd at least slow them down and for the rest of us, enjoy a bit of trivia. :D

From what I understand,

From what I understand, people that make spam bots have been able to get their bots to read Captcha for the most part. I have seen sites implementing random questions that give specific answers like "how do you spell green?" then of course you would type in green. Some not as easy as that.

As for the manual spammers, I think a way of limiting the number of e-mails sent would be very effective. Possibly offering a way for members to "validate" their account, to prove they aren't a spammer. I haven't checked the mail system out yet, so not sure if this is there.. Offering a way for members to report a message as being spam could help catch people as well. Most people on sites like this will usually report such mails if given a simple way to do so.

if its possible you could

if its possible you could limit the number of messages non-friends can send and recieve in a given day, make sure that people who are talking via the message system here know each other in some way, or at least are interested in getting spam from that person.

I like the idea darkcatalyt

I like the idea darkcatalyt came up with. You could try something like "what is this shape?" and then an image of a square, circle, triangle, heart, so on, all random.
